One Week!!! Chicago! Barbiere! Lyric! Nathan Gunn! Candy Eggs! And So Much More!

One week until my JDF-less trip to Chicago!!! One week!!! A week and a half until Barbiere at the Lyric!! And hopefully a little visit backstage after the show! C'mon John O, don't forget! Of course a little message on Facebook before I leave won't hurt.

Google maps has a street view with panoramic photos, so I've actually located the stage door on the picture. So now I wonder... what will happen? Assuming John remembers to put me on the list... I'll go there after the show and I assume there'll be someone there with some sort of list that I'll hopefully be on... and then what? I envision a long hallway, lots of doors, people scurrying about... where to go? How to find John? How not to be totally starstruck if I see/meet Nathan Gunn or Joyce D (whose blog I've been reading and commenting on), who I know are just normal people but still... how not to totally pee in my pants? Or in my dress... In a way it's good that JDF isn't going to be there. True, I wouldn't have had the backstage invite (which I'm still not counting on, just in case...) but the whole starstruck thing - I'd probably start crying and then pee in my pants. Charming.

Ok, let's get realistic. Flashback: 1985. Age: 18. I'm crazy for Adam Ant, INXS, Duran Duran. Ok, never met Duran Duran. But I met Adam Ant and did I pee in my pants? No. In fact, I had a little argument with him because he insulted me. Stupid man. What about INXS? Hung out backstage with them. No big deal. Eurogliders? Anyone remember them? They should have been more popular here than they were... so I wrote them letters when I was in high school. Later met them... and they had the letters. Did I pee in my pants? No. The drummer propositioned me. Did I pee in my pants? No, I didn't really understand what he wanted... but that's another story. The point is, I was starstruck yet I was totally cool. Of course that was before I had a baby... damn better start doing kegels.

Another issue... a thank-you gift. Can't show up backstage empty-handed. Flowers are inappropriate and cumbersome. I have this cute book of anecdotes called The Bumper Book of Operatic Disasters. I looked for it online and found two sequels. Ordered both on Feb 13. Where are they? Not here... so if they don't come this week... there goes that idea. Next idea: an Allfathers Egg. It means schlepping a 1 lb chocolate egg to Chicago and then to the opera house. Hmmm. They're good but... is that a good thank-you gift? Worth the schlep? Candy... not sure. Then what do I do with it if he forgets? Give it to Nathan when he leaves the theater? Better not write a note with it... or maybe I can have an alternate note to stick on it... there's an interesting thought. Prepared for any situation. Heh heh. Ok for anyone who doesn't know me, it's a joke, ok? I'm not writing an alternate note. "Hi, I was going to give this to someone else, but... here... enjoy!" Heh heh.

To the 4 people who read this blog... any gift ideas? Leave me a comment...

Ok, off to find my xanax.

Slow Down, You Sing Too Fast

At my last voice lesson, after telling me how much better the aria sounds now, my teacher admitted to me that perhaps this particular piece is a little bit too complicated for me at this time. She still seems to think that, not this year, but next year, I'll be good enough to audition for the local opera chorus. I still think she's nuts, but that's a whole other topic. The point is, she said she realizes that this piece I'm working on now is very challenging ... and it's a good thing I like a challenge. My problem is, I want to do it perfectly right away, but because it's a challenging piece for me, I have to take it slowly. So I'm breaking it into sections and perfecting one section before really seriously tackling the next.

How do people learn a role for an entire opera???? Like... how in the world do people learn Rosina??? All those notes... What, 16th notes? 32nd even? Plus all the recitativo in between? I guess when it's your full time job it's a bit less daunting???? Oh yeah and music school, and experience, and coaching, and lots of rehearsals...

The House Tenor

Today we were having one of those perennial "what would you do if you won the gagillion dollar lottery" and Jim suggested that I keep a "house tenor." Like, on staff, along with the masseuse, the hair washer and braider and of course the regular staff of cook, house cleaner, laundry doer, landscaper and concierge-type person. Oh wait that's a personal assistant... yeah that's fine. I need someone to bring different sizes to the dressing room when I'm trying stuff on, and someone to carry all the purchases and gift-with-purchases.

The truth is, I've never purchased anything at a makeup counter that qualified for a gift-with-purchase, but I would, if I had someone to carry it for me.

Lungs, Glorious Lungs

And so it continues. Both Alex and Jim were at 102 this morning.
  • Jim went to the doc. Diagnosis: Bronchitis approaching pneumonia, throat infection sinus infection.
  • I called the pediatrician about Alex: "Oh, it's going around. It's probably a virus. If he still has a fever on Friday morning give us a call."
And that's the difference between a high fever in an adult and in a child.

To make this opera related...

Today I tackled that tricky part very very slowly, one note at a time, then did lip trills, then chanted the words, then very slowly sang the words. I think I got it. And just for the record, we're talking about 2 measures of music here, not much. It's like my brain has some sort of block when it comes to learning all the components of the measure - rhythm, notes, words.

Two weeks until Barbiere!!!!

Out of My Price Range

Well. Last week I was so cocky with my "I'm gonna OWN this aria," blah blah blah. That was after being totally overwhelmed by the sheer number of notes on the page the week before. Well the sheer overwhelmedness has returned. Really. What was I thinking? What am I thinking? I keep practicing, doing lip trills, plunking it out on my piano backwards adding one note at a time, doing the rhythms, singing the vowels only and yet it still sounds choppy and awful. I know I have legato in me, I know I can make it sound nice... but how? Why can't I do it????? I need to be slapped, seriously. I see the insanity where my confidence waxes and wanes to the extreme. I see the insanity, but can't control it. Right now I truly believe that there is no way I'll ever be able to sing this aria well. No, really. I know last week I wrote that I was on my way to owning it. Well I just peeked at the price tag, and I can't afford it.

All I Want...

... is a full night's sleep. Is that too much to ask? Another sicko day here in the I'd Rather Be Sleeping Household. Did get a chance to practice my vibrato scales a little, but singing is out of the question thanks to the bizarre cough. Spent 2 hours this afternoon holding a feverish Alex while he napped/dozed. Jim came home with a fever of 102 (no doubt vectoring (infecting) the Rutgers undergraduate population, or at least the students who showed up for class) and then Alex took over 2 hours to get to bed. Parents of toddlers who read this will need no further details as to what that means.

I don't think any of this is good for the vocal cords. Especially the part when I finally lost it and yelled, "Get back in bed or I'm turning off the light and shutting your door!"

Ok, here I go to try and sleep for 8 hours IN A ROW...

What's Your Vector, Victor?

Illness spreads through the house. It starts when coworkers come to work sick. They pass bacteria with the file folders and I bring it home.

I woke up coughing Thursday. Friday I developed a fever. Yesterday, Saturday, Alex refused to eat and was generally whiny. I was still feverish and feeling worn out. Last night I was up most of the night with Alex as his temperature went up up up - 102.5 in the ear thermometer that I'm still not sure how to use. (for example... I was 100.5 in one ear and well below normal, like in the too cold to be alive range, in the other...) Today I have a cough that finishes like an old car struggling to start in the cold. Alex is still a bit warm and now Jim has a low grade fever and cough. I don't recall a contagion spreading this quickly through the house before. Hopefully it'll be gone tomorrow in time for work and school.

Strangely, I can still sing. I'm not singing much because the cough irritates my throat, but Alex keeps asking me to sing from this little songbook of children's songs so I do.

The Importance of Blogs

I never though of my blog as being important to anyone other than myself. However I am aware that many blogs are very important as forums for people to discuss whatever... so where is this leading?

Ok so the guy who left the nice comment on one of my posts about John Osborn ... his name sounded familiar to me but I couldn't figure out why. So I went and googled him. Turned out I recognized his name from MySpace, because he is friends with Juan Diego Florez and I've seen his comments on JDF's page. So I tried to send him a message to thank him for his comment here on my blog, but his MySpace profile is set so that only his friends can send messages. Then yesterday or possibly the day before, I added him as a friend so I could send him the note with the friend request. He accepted the friend request, posted a comment on my MySpace page about John Osborn and then... deleted me from his friends list. Strange stuff...

Now, this guy is an aspiring singer. He has over 1000 friends on MySpace.
And anyone who has read my blog (all three of you?) know that I have no compunction about calling people on rude behavior. While I don't think it's rude that he didn't keep me on his list, I do think it's odd... considering I could potentially be a fan... and I could potentially write about him here.

That said, I was planning on listening to the music this guy had posted on his MySpace Page, but now I won't.

You know, when I told John O that I have my own "silly" blog (or did I say stupid?) he immediately replied that they're NOT stupid... and I tend to agree. Blogs are a great way to share thoughts and opinions about, well, everything.

Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

Voice lesson tonight. I sort of jumped the gun and tried to learn the entire aria in one week, tune, words and all. My teacher sent me home with instructions to sound it out on the piano, lip trill the melody, say the words to the beat while streeeetching out the vowels (legato, legato, legato) and above all not to rush to learn everything at once. I guess I knew this would happen. I want to know it all at once and be perfect and I'm too impatient to learn it the proper way. But I know that I have to follow her advice. Hey at least my pronunciation is good, when my Spanish doesn't interfere...

Also worked on vibrato. I think I was holding back because I was embarrassed, of all things. More psychology... but anyway I can do it. And then when I did the exercises and heard how it sounded I would start laughing. I ended up doing it with my back to the piano because otherwise I'd look at my teacher and laugh.

Told her how I sang Lasciatemi Morire while crawling around in the snow... I think she thought that was kind of weird... but hey it worked at the time!

So was it a voice lesson or a therapy session? .... Yes ...

Supertunities

Got an email from the super captain for the opera company, that they need 4 women for La Traviata this summer. Sent my reply and photo pretty much instantly. I think he knows by now that I'm interested... Now I just have to wait and see.

Deeper into Minus Land

Oooh I was so excited when I logged into MySpace and saw that I had new messages. Turns out it was for two comments that needed my approval... or not. Both from Juan Diego Florez. How odd, I thought that he would comment twice. What in the world could he possibly have said, in a comment on my MySpace page? My skepticism paid off... it was an ad for his CD. Yes, two identical comments of an advertisement:

Juan Diego Florez has posted a new comment about you on MySpace!

According to your privacy settings, all comments must be approved by you before they appear on your profile.

Juan Diego Florez's Comment:

"

Click Here to Order: Juan Diego Flórez – Voce D'Italia: Arias For Rubini"

Please click the link below to approve or deny this comment.

This obviously confirms to me that some underpaid or more likely unpaid intern is doing his MySpace page. How tacky! And how rude to spam an advertisement to your "Friends" which in this case would be your FANS. Go ahead, look at some of his friends' pages for the ad. I poked about a bit - it's not on everyone's page, but it is on many. Tacky tacky tacky. So even though it's more than likely that the Florezberry himself has no knowledge of this, it still reflects poorly on him, pushing him even deeper into Minus Land as far as I'm concerned. I guess I couldn't really be mad at the man for swallowing a fishbone, so at least now here's something. I sent a reply that I wasn't so sure about posting an ad as a comment... hasn't been read yet. I guess the lackey had to go make more espresso.

On My Way to Full Ownership

Last voice lesson I was overwhelmed with the idea of singing a Mozart aria. My teacher would sing a line and I would think, "Man, I can never sound like that. Why waste our time?" But I plodded through it. Well I've had a complete change of attitude. I listened to a live recording of Cosi (From the Lyric, with Nathan Gunn...) and read the music along with the aria, then sang along, and now I remember almost all the words and have almost all the music down too. And I don't sound half bad. I understand all the words and I have my ideas about how to sing it. I think I can really have fun with it. It's cool to actually be confident about singing it! Of course that may change... One problem with my voice lesson is that we start at like 7:30 PM. It's just too late at night near the end of the work week for me. There, I couldn't hit the high notes. Ok, when I did try I ended up sharp, so... but to me that's not hitting them if I'm singing the wrong note, even if it's higher. But at home... I should have a recorder running at all times! I called my mom the other day and sang it for her - she was blown away. She asked if I was going to audition for the opera chorus. And for some reason her praise really made me feel good. Like I was a little kid and my mother is proud of me.

Singing and psychiatry, who knew?

And You Gave Me No Replyyyyyy

Well at least someone read it. That's more than I expected.
  • Score 1 for Nathan Gunn for replying to the message I sent him last summer.
  • Score 0 for the Florezberry for eating fish, getting an infection, canceling an entire run and not replying with even a "Thanks, hope to see you there," which is basically what NG wrote. That puts JDF's score in minusland.
Final score:

The Gunnster: 4
JDF: -4

Message Received?

Just checked my MySpace account. Someone is logged into Juan Diego Florez' MySpace page right now, and the message I sent is marked "read." So I wonder, who logs in, and do they really read the messages?

One Month To Go

What in the world am I going to write about after my trip???? I've been researching the city via your standard web searches, asking everyone I know and trolling through other people's blogs. That turned out to be very fruitful. I learned of a restaurant in the Intercontinental Hotel called Eno that has wine, cheese and chocolate tastings. Yum. Kind of lame to go alone but it sure sounds too good to pass up. I'll take notes so I can post all about it. Plus that'll give me something to do when I'm sitting there all alone.

So now we have a drink at the Signature Lounge at the Hancock Building which I must admit sounds so much nicer than going to the top with tourists and children. Just to clarify, I love children, I love to get on the floor and play and pretend and be silly, but this vacation is about ME ME ME.

I'm so not into art museums but so many people have recommended it that I might think about going.

And of course there's my plan to hit some fancy boutiques try on dresses that I have no itention of buying. Unless there's a sale. A really good sale on something I really love and have a practical use for. So you can see, I won't be buying any.

Oh yeah, and the opera.

Off I go to browse Rachel Ray's travel site.

Number 101!

I just signed in to add some more links to the sidebar and noticed that I have 100 posts! So this is number 101. I need to get a life.

Been watching Bathroom Divas. It was on all day yesterday so I recorded it. I'm learning a lot! I think any amateur singer (like me!!) would learn a lot from it. They have vocal coaches, opera directors, orchestra conductors and other music specialists all providing feedback and guidance to each singer. It's great! One of the vocal coaches says and does some of the exact same things to the singers as my teacher says to me. It's kind of creepy... but not really.

Traipsed all over my office this morning looking for a working photocopy machine to copy my music. Now I need an Italian-English dictionary to do my word-for-word translation. I also need to learn more about Despina. I will become her for this aria I'm about to learn. I know what Cosi is about, but I need to study the character in depth. I'm looking forward to learning a new aria, something longer than what I've sung before.

Last week during warmups I hit a C sharp. And to think I sang tenor in high school chorus because there weren't enough boys.

From One Tenor to Another

Got a comment on one of my earlier posts which I'll paste here:

***********************

I just returned home from opening night of Il Barbiere Di Siviglia at the Lyric Opera Chicago and John Osborn was amazing. I have seen Juan live before and this guy named John Osborn blew me away. I don't like to put one against the other, but i will say i was very impressed with Johns voice. A bit richer than jdf's voice and his voices is equally good. In some parts of the opera i actually like johns voice better. Totally caught me of guard. And yes he did sing "o cessa di pui resitere. It is a ten minute aria that is usually left out of the opera. John made it look easy. It was amazing. To all you opera fans you must seek this guy out. Completely amazing tenor voice. Joel Bjoerling, tenor p.s. Please put up a music page on myspace or some venue so we can hear more.

"You'll Never Sing On Stage At The Met..."

"... if you only sing the vowels." Or so said my voice teacher today. I told her she should chop off the last half of that sentence to be truthful. I pointed out that perhaps one day I'll be onstage as a super... but let's be realistic. She said that when I was singing just the vowels of "Goodnight My Someone" to practice making it more legato. I'm reluctantly learning some songs in English just to have them on my list, in case I ever audition somewhere... one day...

Today she gave me a book of arias, I forget the name... to copy one of Despina's, from Cosi. Which one? Don't remember at the moment! I'm at the very beginning stages of learning it - my homework is to translate it word for word and do the IPA for the entire thing. You know I'll sit down at the piano and try to pick some of it out.

Listened to the podcast of an interview Nathan Gunn did with the Lyric. He described the scenario of Figaro's first aria and now I'm sort of annoyed with myself for listening. On the other hand, my memory is so bad that by tomorrow I probably won't remember, so I won't type it here.

Still have straight hair. I guess eventually I'll have to wash it...
Scroll to Feb 9, "How To Work It," to see how it usually looks.

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Wow wow wow!

Voice lesson tonight- WOW! I incorporated stuff from watching Bathroom Divas, as nutty as that sounds, and it was great! I was RELAXED and I just threw myself into the character and the singing took care of itself! It was great fun too.

Fashion note: Had my hair blown out straight:

It's weird, so smooth. I think I prefer my curls but we'll keep it straight for a few days.

Got those shoes - they're going back tomorrow! First of all they were DIRTY! Ewwww. These shoes were not new. Oh yeah and I couldn't walk in them -the heel was way too high!

In the realm of, it doesn't hurt to ask, I sent a note to the Florezberry on MySpace... it's unlikely that he checks it himself, and he probably gets tons of mail, but I wished him well, told him I'm going to Chicago but it won't be the same without him, yadda yadda, I have a ticket for Fille at the Met and would love to say hello, I'll be at the stage door, etc and so on. I should have asked to be put on the list but I didn't have the nerve. I'm confident that I will not get a response. In fact, even though he logs on every few days, I'm confident that the two weeks will pass and the message will be deleted from my sent mailbox before it's even read. On the other hand, Nathan Gunn, who from now on will be called The Gunnster, did write back, so who knows. Oh wait he had 6 friends and JDF has over 400...

Optimist, pessimist... both at once!

"My good opinion, once lost, is gone forever."

Thank you, Mr. Darcy.

It's not true though. Scott R emailed me back with a whole list of things to do in Chicago, suggestions of where to eat, where the backstage door is, an assurance that John O will be good and a great suggestion about the Hancock Tower - instead of paying to get to the observatory, he recommended just going to the restaurant one level down and using that same money on a drink - the view is essentially the same. Works for me! He also said that if he were there he'd show me around the opera house.

So while I still think his email from a few months ago was out of line, as I posted since then, I don't think he meant it to be mean. I think he just sent it without thinking about how it would look to the person at the other end - me.

So anyway I wrote back to thank him and told him about my meeting with J.O.

It's all good.

SuperTastic

Just exchanged a couple of emails with the opera company super captain to remind him of my existence. He said that it looks like they'll need supers for La Traviata and The Merry Widow. Of course I wanted to be in La Cenerentola... go figure. But I'd be in all three if I could! So anyway there's a good chance that I'll be back on stage, silently, with the opera company this summer!

Shoe Dilemma

Not sure if these shoes go with the new dress. Thinking of trying these. Anyone have a comment or opinion? HELP!

Ahh what the heck... it's free overnight and free return shipping if they don't fit.

Wall o' Juan

Well. I knew there was a "Wall o' Nathan" out there. Just came across a "Wall o' Juan." Wait does he look like he's choking on a bone in that one shot...

One Minor Annoyance

I do wish I had contacted Mike P about being a super in Rigoletto. I foolishly assumed he would email me if needed. And then all the way from my seat in the balcony I recognized Cathy all dressed up on stage. She didn't come to the reception, but I met the other woman (whose name escapes me...Kelly maybe) who was in the production. Now I know to contact him this coming April or May about the summer.

More on the party - I saw Erika, my "dead Juliette," from R&J. She's so sweet. Also saw some of the guys from the summer, guys who I was never introduced to, but when I went over to them and mentioned that, one of them was like, "Oh you're Susan. Of course I know who you are." So I had to ask him his name. His name is Jim. I had him mixed up with someone else - all these young cute opera singers look alike! Heh heh. He said he read my blog, but not recently. Well thank goodness for that. I write on the assumption that no one reads it but me. Obviously someone is reading it as I am NOT the one posting the anonymous comments. Anyway, I told him that I ended up taking all the videos down, and told him about Scott's mean-ish email to me about how I was potentially ruining his career by posting 30 second videos from dress rehearsals. He didn't seem surprised. Interesting, no?

Sucked Into Reality

I'll admit it: I've never seen American Idol. Or Survivor. Or most of the others. I did watch a couple episodes of Temptation Island way back when the chick with the long red hair was on... c'mon, y'all know who I'm talking about. So anyway, the point is, I'm not a reality show junkie.

Until now.

Flipping through the channels and come across "Bathroom Diva." They're at... get this... OPERA BOOT CAMP!!! A bunch of adults who have never sung opera are thrown together into a dorm where they get extensive training in all things operatic. Then each week one of them is voted off by the judges. It was really cool to watch - like a master class, only not as drawn out and boring because it was edited for the television audience. Check out the intro with the quirky note-following with Der Holle Rache, stopping to make words that start with p or b depending on the note.

I have found my niche in the reality show obsession. Or maybe it's more accurate to say, they have found me?

Wait a sec!

Duh. I have a copy of Barbiere live from SF Opera from 2006 with Nathan Gunn as Figaro and John O as Almaviva. Like, on my iPhone. The same iPhone I used to take the picture.

It's a small world after all, it's a small word after all....

There, I hope that's stuck in you head now. It's stuck in mine. Damn.

More Evidence that "It's Gonna Be OK"

This review of John Osborn as Tonio in Fille, from grandi-tenori.com:

Tonio is a part that has everyone wondering before the performance if the tenor can manage the 9 high Cs of “Pour mon âme” without sounding like an agonal event. Tenor John Osborn didn’t hit 9 high Cs, he gave us 11 or 12 and threw in a high D as a bonus. All this while climbing up and down a ladder and balancing on a barrel. His tone is pure light lyric with a brilliant full and focused top. His is the perfect voice for all the tenor roles from Mozart through to Donizetti (Norma excepted). He has everything needed to be a great tenor. He’s short, pudgy, balding, and has scintillating high notes. “Pour me rapprocher de Marie” showed he can also maintain a long line and sing with tenderness and beauty. Where has this guy been since winning Placido Domingo’s Operalia in 1996? I know where he’s been, but why isn’t he at the top?

A Record

2/12/07...Editing this post. Lucky you if you saw it before I deleted the content.

I am such a dork. :) ---> [This line is related to the original content.]

By the way, today is the record for the most blog entries in one day.

My favorite line from someone else's blog

I love reading Opera Chic's blog. Here's my favorite line from one of her recent entries:

Anyway, Flórez (every time you say his name it just makes him more powerful)

Yes, Opera Chic, I understand.

Article about John Osborn

I know there might be one or two Juan Diego fans out there who glance at my ramblings from time to time. I also know that there are mixed feelings about the whole Chicago thing, from the comments I've read at Opera Chic , Parterre and other places. So to supplement my previous review of JDF's replacement (well, can ANYONE really replace him??) I will paste and link here an article from the U.S. One, that free paper I mentioned before that had this article about about John Osborn, the man who has the difficult task of reminding everyone of their disappointment. But like I said before, I don't think he or any of the ticket-holders have anything to worry about. Believe it or not, I'm actually looking forward to seeing him again.

Opera Fashion

Well now that there's a good chance I'll be going backstage in Chicago, I realized I have to get something totally awesome to wear. Not for anyone specific - just for myself.

From what I've seen, opera fashion seems to be all about rhinestones and the little black dress. Inspired by the blog of an old acquaintance from high school, I went out and found a fabulous dress in petite, no less, in the perfect turquoise for my coloring. On sale too!

Of course, I'll lose 5 pounds, get a tan, tone up my arms and grow 6 inches between now and then.

How to Work It

Yesterday I went alone to see a local production of Rigoletto. Here I am on my way out the door.

I couldn't get a comp anything so, luckily, since I'm a grown-up person with a job, I plunked down the cash. I bought the ticket the afternoon of the show and was in the 2nd to last row in the balcony! Not a big deal - it's a small theater.

The opera was fantastic. It was semi-staged - the orchestra was on the stage behind a smoky screen, and all the action took place downstage. The woman who sang Gilda was FABULOUS!!!! But that's not why you're reading this...

John Osborn was great. His voice is not as light as JDF's but it's close. It was almost too light for the role here. He can hit the high notes NO PROBLEM. So already during the opera I realized that I wouldn't be disappointed in Chicago. I felt like he was holding back strings of coloratura that weren't appropriate for Verdi, but WHOAH I can't wait to hear him sing Almaviva!

Afterwards I went to the reception. It was weird to be there alone but a bunch of people I knew from last summer eventually wandered in - some of the chorus, some dancers, etc. So once the cast was there, the director of the opera company made a toast and introduced each person, thanked everyone, blah blah blah. That's when I made my Move.

I made my way through the crowd until I was near John. He was trapped in conversation by some elderly Patron of the Arts blah blah blah. The talk turned to traveling to see operas...seemed like an appropriate moment so I shoved my way in, stuck out my hand and introduced myself. (excerpts follow as I don't remember exactly, you know how that is)

Me: Excuse me, John? Hi, my name is Susan. I'm going to Chicago next month to see Barbiere.

Him: That's great!

Me: Actually... I was going to see Juan Diego Florez...

Him: Ohhhhh you're one of THOSE people!! (with a laugh)

Me: It's ok, I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Him: I know, I can sing. (said laughingly and nice, not snotty)

I asked him if he was going to sing Cessa because from what I heard he can, and he was like, "I sure am!" And dorkingly enough I actually gave him a thumbs up and was like, "Alll riiight, now I can go and report back to all the opera blogs I read. People want to know."

I mentioned that I have my own silly blog, and he said, "No, they're not silly, they're all great!" or something like that. He seemed thrilled that I was going to give him a good review with the blog audience.

I also told him that I was going specifically to see JDF and Nathan Gunn together and he went off on how wonderful NG is, and Joyce D, and the entire cast, and if I come for one of the first three performances I'll see an all american cast, which is unusual for an opera... I told him I'm coming on the 19th, and he said, "Oh, that's the 2nd to last performance."

And then he said: What's your last name? How do you spell it? Will you come back to say hello? I'll put you on the list.

Me, totally stupid: How do I do that?

Him: You just come to the stage door and give them your name.

Me: Oh! (I think I thanked him but I can't remember!)

I wrote my name, email and blog url on a napkin and said, "Now don't sneeze in this," as I handed it to him. Meanwhile he had begun an animated conversation in Italian with someone he addressed as Maestro - but it wasn't the conductor of this particular show. So I interrupted one last time and had Mr. Italian Maestro take our picture "for the blog." ;)

He said he'd put my info into his blackberry so he remembers to put me on the list that day.

He was really nice and jokey-friendly. Very easy to talk to.

And then I giggled all the way home.

So... the question is... will he remember?

A Familiar Theme: Alone to the Opera

Couldn't get a comp into the reception tonight so I went ahead and bought a ticket to both the opera and the post-performance reception. I'm wearing the same outfit I wore to the Met except with gorgeous new pumps I got on endless.com, my new favorite shoe shopping site. Have an agenda. Will report again tomorrow.

Have been enjoying immensely the Opera Chic blog, especially the entries and comments on the fishbone situation.

Time to go pretty myself up for tonight.

Half a degree of separation

I wrote this email to a friend (yet another YouTuber-turned-friend) and realized it can double as a blog posting:

Can things get any stranger? NJ Opera is doing Rigoletto this weekend. Today I picked up the local free entertainment newspaper for the daily listings of stuff to do. I looked at the table of contents to see what page the daily listings started. For some reason I glanced down at the list of articles, which I never ever do. There was an article about a "Nice Tenor Playing the Cad," so I went to the page. The name of the guy sure sounded familiar... sure enough, it's the guy who's replacing JDF. Now, I might be able to score a free ticket for the concert. There's a reception afterwards that you have to pay for, but I went last year on a free ticket and was able to crash. (shhh, heh heh). So if I get a ticket, my plan is to crash the reception and then pass this guy some fish. No really I'll try to chat with him if I can because he's another potential contact for meeting Nathan Gunn. So we'll see...First, let's see if that ticket materializes. :)

A Fishbone?

Who gets a throat infection from swallowing a fishbone????????????

Lasciatemi Morire - The Stages of Grief

Warning: Overly dramatic post follows.

I cried myself to sleep last night after hearing that Juan Diego has cancelled his run at the Lyric. At first I couldn't believe it. I was in denial. Then the floodgates opened.

I cannot express in words how much I was looking forward to seeing him as Almaviva, and seeing him and Nathan Gunn in the same opera, and possibly meeting him afterwards.

I am crushed. Devastated. I am on the verge of tears. I realize this means I have invested too much emotion in this opera, in this trip, in this man.

I am moving through the stages of grief and am kind of angry at him. How dare he go and cancel. Does he have any idea that people save their money to go and see him perform, and then to have him do something stupid like eat fish with bones? And is he being overly cautious by cancelling the entire run??? Why not do the last two performances, which would include the one I'm going to?

Bargaining: I'm sort of hoping that maybe he will be well enough and will step in for the last two. Is that bargaining? I don't think so - I'm not offering anything in return except my gratitude and releif if he does. Which I know he won't.

Depression: Well that's been there from the start.

Acceptance: At least I'll get away on my own and of course I can't forget that Nathan Gunn will be there, and hopefully I'll be able to meet him at the stage door afterwards.

This sucks.

Misery.

Star Tenor Sidelined by Fishbone
The Associated Press, 31 January 2007

Star tenor Juan Diego Florez has been forced to cancel all performances in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's production of Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" because of a throat infection caused by a swallowed fishbone, the company said Thursday.

Doctors in Parma, Italy, have advised the 35-year-old singer that he not perform through mid-March at the earliest, the company said.

American tenor John Osborn, 35, will replace Florez in the role of Count Almaviva for the 12 scheduled performances of the comic opera through March 22.

"We were dismayed to learn of Juan Diego's medical difficulty, especially knowing how much he was looking forward to returning to Lyric, and send all best wishes for his recovery," Lyric's general director William Mason said in a statement. "Fortunately, John Osborn, a major interpreter of the bel canto repertoire, is available on short notice."

After Chicago, Florez's next scheduled appearance is March 31 in his native Peru, where he is to sing the role of the Duke in Verdi's "Rigoletto." He is scheduled to portray Tonio in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Donizetti's "La Fille du Regiment" starting April 21.

It's all in the mind. And the throat.

I'm happy to report that after two rounds of antibiotics and a large amount of decongestant, antihistamine, rx nasal sprays and a week of prednisone I've finally recovered from the various upper respiratory infections.

For voice I'm now learning Lasciatemi Morire, Arianna's aria, from Monteverdi's lost opera, L'Arianna, composed and produced in Mantua in 1608.

Lasciatemi morire
E chi violete voi che mi comforte
in così dura sorte,
in così gran martire?
Lasciatemi morire

I'll admit I listened to an old recording of it on YouTube and got some ideas of how to sing it. But I'm still making it my own. So there's this one note, I think it's an F, the "mi" of Lasciatemi in two places... and I was sort of clamping down on it which made it impossible for me to sing it. Finally I remembered my vow to just "sing out" so I did... and WOW. I relaxed my jaw, I felt my throat open and out came this beautiful note with vibrato. My teacher jumped up from the piano and was jumping up and down with excitement. I was able to repeat it a couple of times but I still have to practice lapsing into the relaxed mode that allowed me to sing like that. I didn't realize the extent that the voice lesson was like a counseling session. But it really is. So much of it is in the mind - I need to be able to relax and not care what anyone else thinks about how I sound - just relax and let it out. I have to LET myself do that. It's not easy but I'm working on it.

Maybe one day I'll record myself singing it and post it. Maybe.

The Future

I just checked the upcoming Met schedule here: http://http://www.metmaniac.com/future.html and can now plan my future...

For 2008-2009, I'll be seeing La Sonnambula, with Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Florez, possibly Don Giovanni, and whatever Denise "drags" me to with her class.

I think anyone going to that list can guess what else I'm planning on getting tickets for.

Nathan Gunn's not listed there but that doesn't mean he won't be in anything there next year. Just have to wait for the official schedule.

Attack of the Throat!

I had to cancel my voice lesson this week. Whatever bug I caught from Alex turned into strep throat and a sinus infection. No wonder I felt so craptastic all week. After the doc looked in my throat, nose and ears I asked him if he saw anything good. "Oh yes," he replied, "Very colorful."
So now I'm waiting impatiently for the antibiotics to kick in.

I haven't sung since Sunday. I mean regular singing, like in the car, or along to music, or just because. Nothing. I tried this morning... the notes just wouldn't come out right. I mean I thought I was going to sing a certain note, but it would just come out wrong. Bleh.

This and That

Random post follows:

To reply to a comment, that night (New Year's Eve) Alex woke up at 3am, burning up with fever, and I sat with him until the tylenol kicked in - about an hour. Then he was up again at 5 and came to my bed where we slept until 10. So... I'm getting some sleep! Just not all in a row. Just one of the many joys of parenthood. And now I have it... Bleh.

Alex is fond of giving everyone nicknames. Yesterday he declared that Juan Diego Florez' nickname is Juan Diego Florazzberry.

Internet stuff: A few posts ago I mentioned a woman who I had been exchanging emails with after we found out we were going to the same performance of Fille du Regiment at the Met. We had been emailing every couple of days, getting to know each other, sharing favorite movies and books, etc. Then she just stopped. It was weird. I went back through the emails to see if I said anything bizarre that might have freaked her out... nothing. At least I don't think so.

More internet stuff: A couple of weeks ago I went to Nathan Gunn's MySpace page and looked at the profiles of the people on his friends list. One woman had a YouTube page that I went to. One of her favorites was "I Love to Singa." I have the cartoon version of that on my favorites list, so I clicked on it to see the "real person" version. In the list of related videos on the side was a song by the Phil Spitalny All Girl Orchestra. Auntie Cyd, who I've mentioned before, was in that orchestra. So of course I clicked on THAT video, and ended up corresponding with the person who posted it. I sent him this picture:

And he added this video to YouTube using the image. I can't seem to embed it here... Anyway Auntie Cyd is at the piano to the left. I have a bigger version of the picture at my MySpace page. And of course I've added it as a favorite to my YouTube page.

And that's my random post for today.

Romeo Still Makes Me Cry

Here I am alone on New Year's Eve... well, not exactly. True, Jim is out overnight at a party that I'd rather not be at... but Alex is here after all... with a fever... and a cold... and what appears to be pinkeye. This leads to opera, I promise...

So he hasn't napped for over a year, but today he took a 90 minute nap, then he asked to go to bed early. He woke up about an hour later and was pretty wide awake, so I sat him on my lap in front of the computer while I played Scrabble on Facebook (it's my other addiction!) and we listened to the Met's live broadcast of Romeo. Alex finally went to bed and I listened to the rest on headphones.

So I've heard this opera dozens of times... yet I still cry at the end.

Tonight Matthew Polenzani was Romeo. I've heard him dozens of times since he's Tamino on that ever-famous English Magic Flute Alex used to watch every day. He was fabulous tonight. What a beautiful voice, like flowing water.

I listed through the curtain call. Most of the cast was gone by then- only 4 or 5 came out for curtain calls. That's odd - I thought they all always did. I guess I was wrong.

I didn't get to hear Nathan Gunn's first aria because the laptop wasn't cooperating... grrr.... Even though I have three different recordings of it, it's just different when you know it's live. It's like watching gymnastics in the Olympics - there's that tension that anything can happen.

My online friend who likes Anna Netrebko flew to NYC from Barcelona to see the performance tonight. I'm sure he had a great time. I'm envious!

If only I had unlimited funds, I'd go to the opera all the time.

Happy New Year to all. It's 11:15 and I'm going to bed.

Nathan Gunn and Scotch, perfect together!

Tonight at my brother-in-law's house, Alex announced that he wanted to listen to Nathan Gunn. Ok, so I put on Just Before Sunrise. I then wandered into the study to find Jim and his brother smelling an an open bottle of scotch. My brother-in-law has speakers in there so we could hear the music. I stuck my nose in for a sniff and thought it smelled nice, so I asked to try it. After 1 sip I said, "You know, this is PERFECT music to listen to while drinking scotch." They agreed and then my brother-in-law opened a cabinet and pulled out three other
bottles, and suddenly I was having a scotch-tasting. They were still working on giant glasses of wine so it was just me. At one point I asked for a cigar just to pose with for a picture... and my
brother-in-law stuck a golf magazine in my hand... and all the while we're listening to the CD. Every now and then one of us would exclaim, "Wow, this really IS great music to drink scotch to!" And no I didn't smoke the cigar!

By the way, the title of this post is a spoof of some old New Jersey slogan: New Jersey and You - Perfect Together.

Chastised!

Did you ever do something that you thought was a nice thing, only to have someone get mad? That's what happened to me recently.

When I was a super in Romeo last summer, I took photographs and a few 30 second videos at rehearsals. I posted them to Photobucket and told my contact at the office for the opera company about them. Actually if I recall I was given the ok to take the photos. She posted the links to the opera blog.

I was poking around my computer last week and found a few more that I hadn't previously posted. I uploaded one to photobucket and sent a message to the guy who played Romeo, to let him know they were there and to see if he wanted his own copy.

I got the following message from him yesterday:

When I first found out that there were videos on the web taken at rehearsals of R&J, I was mortified. You obviously don't realize how detrimental those types of things are to a performer. Those of us who sing for a living in major houses are constantly under watch to see where we as young singers are going vocally. The role of Romeo is a VERY big role and is a very difficult sing. That is why I chose to try it out in <>. It's a small company, very little exporsure and it was a safe place to try it out. When a video of a rehearsal surfaces, it gives those that judge and hire us a sneak peek in and they make their judgements based on a rehearsal, a place that is supposed to be "safe" as opposed to an actual performance when the performer can feel comfortable that all risks had already been taken in rehearsals. In rehearsals we can screw up and have a bad singing day and noone cares. No so if they are being recorded and put on the internet without our knowlege.

If an opera company takes any video or pictues during a rehearsal, they have to notify the singers and get their ok. Otherwise, they have a big lawsuit on their hands.

In the future, PLEASE don't record other performers in rehearsal unless they know about it and are ok with it.

No hard feelings, just thought you needed to know.

All my best and have a great Christmas!

*******************

Ok no hard feelings but you know what? I cried after reading that. Maybe I'm too sensitive, maybe I'm premenstrual, but I felt terrible. I obviously don't realize how detrimental these things are... Is it possible to write that to someone without it being mean?

Of course I deleted the entire Romeo folder from Photobucket and the few I had put up on Youtube. (They were marked private so they weren't out there for all to see.) I sent him a reply:

Wow, sorry, I had no idea. They're not on youtube or anywhere where anyone can find them... but of course I'll take them off photobucket.

Glad you're feeling better.

~Susan

and a few minutes later...

Hi again, I deleted all the contents of the folder from my photobucket account, and there's nothing on youtube. I also deleted my comment on your home page that mentions the videos.

Again, I am so sorry - I feel terrible. I had no idea. I'm just mortified that something I did with good intentions could potentially harm your (or anyone's) career... I'm so sorry... and of course I'll never do it again!

Have a nice holiday.

**************

Then I told Husband about it and mentioned that the promotions person had posted the links to those videos in the Official Opera Blog. He said that in his opinion, her doing so was essentially giving me permission to post them. He also pointed out that when "Romeo" signed the contract it probably said that the opera company can use photos and images... But I wasn't about to write a 3rd email to him. Perhaps if he replies... Which I doubt I will.

So much for being an opera fan - I thought I was doing something nice and instead apparently I was potentially harming his career. I mean that sort of for real and sort of sarcastically. I don't believe I have the power to affect his or anyone's career. If he's got the talent, a 30 second video isn't going to change someone's mind about him.

Did I Mention that I Love the Internet?

Turns out one of my online opera friends has access to many many opera recordings... I now have Nathan Gunn as Figaro in San Francisco Opera's Babiere, The Met's Die Zauberflote with Nathan as Papageno and I'm in the process of obtaining one of 3 different dates of the Met's Barbiere with Juan Diego Florez!!! I also have the info to get a video of Billy Budd with Nathan as some other, smaller part, but I don't think I like the opera enough to take the time to download it.

No... je ne raconte rien... il y a boucoup d'ans... and I'm sure I'm spelling it all wrong...

Ma, italiano? Io parlo? No, non parlo italiano. Mais je desire estudiarla. Ha ha una mezcla.

Ok all this talk of opera is keeping me up waaaay past my bedtime. So what else is new?

The Advice Worked!

So after cancellations for various reasons, I had my first voice lesson today since December 1st. I kept that advice mind that Nathan Gunn talked about in his podcast, the advice from one of his teachers to "just sing" and not worry about how you sound or what anyone thinks... so I kept that in mind today and it really made a difference! It helped me to relax and I was able to get all the way to a high C during warm ups and you know what? I didn't sound bad! Now that I know I can do it, my next step is to be able to hit it for longer than just a second at the top of a vocal exercise.

On an unrelated note, my "opera source" hooked me up with recordings of Barbiere in San Francisco with Nathan as Figaro, and Die Zauberflote at the Met with him as Papageno. Hooray for the internet!

Right. Am I 14 or 40?

I seriously have a crush on an opera singer. What the heck?

Thank goodness for YouTube. It's like MTV On Demand!

More Kindness of More Strangers

I love the internet.

A fan of Anna Netrebko read my review of her fabulous performance last Wednesday and commented on my blog. We began emailing back and forth. He has a subscription to Sirius Radio and has recordings of the 12/12 and 12/15 broadcasts. He uploaded them to a file sharing site and explained how to download them. So I know have the full operas from both days! Denise sure was surprised when I handed her a copy on CD the other day. I've offered to send him my copy of Opera News with Anna on the cover but haven't heard back.

I love the internet.

In the comments section of a Juan Diego Florez video on YouTube people were writing that they were going to see him in Fille Du Regiment at the Met. I chimed in and it turns out I'm going the same day as someone else who posted. We began corresponding and it turns out we have a LOT in common - it's sort of scary. First off, not only are we going to the same performance, we're sitting 10 seats away from each other in the same row. We both used to teach ESL and now do something else. She taught a TOEFL prep course and I work at ETS writing, reviewing and editing portions of the TOEFL. We have the same favorite authors, books and movies. She's a little younger than me. It's like we fit some demographic for the young opera fan.

I corresponded a little with another YouTuber after reading her comments for a Nathan Gunn video. I've also corresponded a little bit with other Juan Diego Florez fans.

The internet has made the world smaller. I love it. Husband and I each just got an iPhone, which includes a cell phone, internet access, weather, email, YouTube, iTunes, traffic reports, maps, an iPod and many other features. My son will grow up in a completely different world than I did. It's like the people who grew up before TV... we can't imagine life without it, even when we don't have one in the house. He won't be able to imagine life without the internet.

One more tidbit. I have a tracker on my Myspace page. On Dec 12, the day I went to the Met, someone at the Metropolitan Opera viewed my Myspace page:
Location Access Organization

New York, US
207.237.181.16
12/12 10:22:26 AM
Metropolitan Opera Private Private

At first I didn't see that it was AM because it was on the next line, and I thought, holy ***! who at the Met looked at my MySpace page during INTERMISSION????? Then I saw it was the morning... so someone was probably at NG's page and clicked onto mine. Oh well, there goes that random thought that I won't even put here. Ok, so I'll concede... he probably didn't actually make eye contact with me during the curtain call, although he did scan the balcony.

Romeo AGAIN!

Off to the movies today to see the encore of yesterday's live HD transmission from the Met! Listened to most of it at Mark and Kara's house yesterday.

Quick story - Kara hired Ella's Music Together teacher to do a sample class during the party yesterday. It was nothing compared to Alex's class at Westminster Conservatory. Alex left after 10 minutes and went upstairs. I followed and was listening to the broadcast while Jim took Alex to the bathroom... then he told Jim that he doesn't want to go back downstairs, he wants to stay upstairs and listen to the opera. That's my boy!

Ok, where was I? Men in tights... more

So let's talk about the costumes. The Capulets were all in red, the Montagues in some version of blue. Romeo, as I mentioned before, was in these skin-tight aqua pants with matching boots. Mercutio was in turquoise tights with some kind of skirty jacket thing. Juliet wore beautiful gowns of course.

More about Nathan's performance... if I didn't already write this before... He was totally into it, like he BECAME a teenager out for a rumble. With his flouncy shirt and his hair flopping in his face... well the word rakish comes to mind. The fight scene was awesome. Interestingly, all the other men came out for that scene with their shirts buttoned up, but his was halfway open and opened even more during the scene. Then after Mercutio was stabbed, it crossed my mind that I was in the same room as Nathan Gunn, and he was laying sweaty on the floor with his shirt half off. It was a very big room... but lest I digress into more behavior more fitting for a 16 year old than a 40 year old...

One more point before I go to bed.

During some of the interludes they projected an image onto the curtain with some Latin words on it. Well, Denise majored in Latin at Princeton (wow) and Stan has studied it. With his binoculars he was able to read it. The top part was something used as filler for when they want to use up space - sort of a nonsense phrase. The part around the bottom said something silly, which of course I don't recall right now because they were talking about it in the limo ride home and I was concentrating on not getting car sick (I failed). But it was obviously some sort of inside joke by whoever made the image. I'll find out what it said and will post it eventually.

Ok now off to bed. More to come in dribs and drabs.

More on those Men in Tights...

Here we are at Part 2 of ? of my ramblings about last night.

Let's talk about the stage.

Did I mention the celestial theme? Ok so the stage had this raised circular dais and THAT had a circular inset that rotated and ramped in any direction. It was cool b/c at some points it would slowly rotate, or else it would ramp up, and they changed it for different scenes. Ok so on this they'd sometimes project a circular map of the stars, I'm sure it has a name, and it would slowly rotate. They also had that against the back wall at some points. Above the stage they had an orrery, which is a model that shows the planets in the solar system in their relative positions as they move. I couldn't really see it except when part of it dipped below the curtain swag thing, but you could see the shadows on the stage as the planets moved. The shadows included not just the planets but the bars attaching them to the device. They also had clockworks, I think near the end, in one corner, also in a circular piece.

Agh must go to bed... will continue... tomorrow.

Enchanted Evening, Men in Tights

*Sigh.* What a fabulous time I had yesterday! Where to begin, where to begin... I know anyone who's reading (and at least one person does b/c he or she posted a comment asking how it was) will want to know about the opera itself, but patience, reader(s), patience.

I took the train from Hamilton at 3:11. Denise, Stan and Kevin got on at New Brunswick at about 3:30 and I wandered through the cars looking for them. Not too fond of going in between the cars while the train is moving! But I found them and it was fun to all sit together for the ride. At Penn Station, Kevin and I decided to walk while Denise and Stan were going to take a cab. It was cold but I'm so glad I walked! I experienced sensory overload within 10 minutes. So many people, so many lights, constant noise, it was amazing! It'd been a long time since I'd been to NYC but it doesn't seem to have changed much!

When we got to Lincoln Center we found Denise et al in the Met Lobby. They got there about 10 minutes before we did. We went to the shop and fiddled about until dinner.

Dinner was at the Grand Tier, the restaurant at the Met. Very fu-fu (or is that, fru-fru?) and very yummy. And, of course, very expensive, but well worth it. I had the duck breast with some kind of fancy delicious sauce, parsnip gratin, huckleberrys and mashed butternut squash. Denise and I shared a dessert of a mixed cookie plate - simply divine.

Our seats were in the balcony and I had to do a mad dash up two flights of stairs after using the bathroom on the grand tier level, where the 5 minute warning bell went off while I was still on line! But I made it...

Ok, ok, on to the opera itself!

It. Was. Fabulous.

The music, the costumes, the stage, oh and did I mention the singing?

Anna Netrebko was absolutely stunning. When she first began to sing it brought tears to my eyes and I realized what it must have been like for my grandfather back in Kiev over 100 years ago when he snuck into the opera house there. She was perfect. At times I thought I was listening to a recording, then I had to remind myself that no, she's right there, doing this right now, live. She was the perfect Juliette, one I believe will be used as an example for anyone else who plays the role. Roberto Alagna was Romeo. I thought he'd be too old but he must be a good actor - he convinced me that he was a teenager in love! They were great together.

Nathan Gunn was great, as usual, although sometimes a bit too quiet. In my opinion the audience did not cheer enough after Mercutio's aria, but I think they were saving all their energies for Alagna and Netrebko. The fight scene was awesome! I couldn't decide if I should use the binoculars or watch the whole thing. I went with the binocs and had a great view of all the perfectly choreographed moves. I was hoping for fake blood but I guess that would be too messy.

After the intermission, which I spent on line for the ladies room, the scene opened to the famous floating bed. There was much more of Alagna than I ever wanted to see, and believe me I had already seen enough with those sea-green skin-tight disco pants he wore - they left nothing to the imagination, and I didn't want to imagine in the first place... but here we are in the bedroom, they're crawling all over each other half-dressed on this elevated bed and singing at the same time! It was amazing. It felt vaguely peeping-tomish to use the binoculars!

I still need to talk about the stage, the costumes, the lighting, the rest of the opera, the curtain call... all in due time.

Romeo Tomorrow!

Well it seemed like it would never get here, and now, tomorrow is Romeo at the Met. I have my outfit figured out (except for the earrings, go figure) and the travel and dinner arrangements are made. The ticket is in my wallet and my purse is planned and put together with what I'll need. So now, ironically, given the name of my blog, I'm wondering how I'm going to manage to stay awake! I'm too tired to be excited. Hopefully tomorrow the opposite will be true.

Thursday, December 6, 2007

Less than a week...

...until Romeo at the Met! I will, of course, post my impressions of the evening, no doubt starting with the train ride into the city! We have reservations at the swank restaurant at the Met, The Grand Tier, at 6, and the opera starts at 8. Denise hired a limo to take us all directly to our homes afterwards. It's going to be an expensive night but well worth it! There are 6 or 7 of us total. I only know 2 of them so it should be interesting!

Voice lessons are going along swimmingly. I'm working on mastering the ornamentation in Star Vicino. I can actually listen to the recordings of the lessons without cringing! Still waiting for the vestiges of this sore throat to go away before I make another embarrassing web cam recording to post here. Just listened to the one I put in my previous post... Argh how screechy. But I'm leaving it there because as far as I know, pretty much no one reads this but me, and if anyone does see it, well, who cares?

I was listening to the podcasts on Nathan Gunn's website the other day. It's him talking about Just Before Sunrise and also about his own history with music. He mentioned something that one of his teachers told him - you just gotta let go and sing and not worry about what anyone else is thinking. I do that with so many other aspects of my life, so I'm going to try to apply that to singing. I already do that when I sing alone in the car... don't we all?

The Effects of Laryngitis

Just goofing off with the new webcam, singing along to videos on YouTube. Here's one from yesterday... a few bad notes but overall better than before the lessons... especially with the yucky sore throat... I used to think this entire song was too high for me... So this was just before the laryngitis set in...
What's embarrassing is that the words are right there on the screen and I still forgot them and mixed them up with another English version of this duet I know... oops... and I sort of lose it after the 1st half... but I'll put myself out there and post it anyway.

I made another one today... I was going to post it but it's mostly me singing poorly, swallowing and cringing and clutching at my throat!

Ok I'll be quiet now...

Once my voice is back I'll do another. I promise.

Recurring theme: Alone to the Opera!

You know, you only live once and who knows what could happen tomorrow. We all know people who wake up feeling fine and suffer a tragic accident or are diagnosed with a fatal illness... so not to be morbid... ok it's too late for that... but anyway... keeping that in mind...

I'm still kicking myself for not seeing Juan Diego Florez in Miami when I went to Florida last month. I came home the morning of his performance. I knew he was going to be there but forgot all about it when I booked the flight. So... Yeah I know I'm going to see him in Chicago in March... but he's also going to be in La Fille du Regiment at the Met in April and May. Almost all the shows are sold out. Just for fun I was poking around on the Met's website and found a few tickets availalbe for some of the shows. I almost got a ticket for May 12 and realized in time that he won't be in that particular performance! Whew! So I found a single ticket in the second to last row of the orchestra for Friday, May 2nd, and I thought, what the heck. I asked a couple of people if they wanted to go and of course they didn't, so once again I'm on my own. I'm going to the Met on a Friday night! In May! By myself! I look at it like, I probably got a better seat (2nd to last row???) than if I tried to find two seats together. The great thing about going alone is, I can do what I want when I want. I can wait at the stage door afterwards (with who knows how many others...) or not. I know I'll probably do that in Chicago, unless the weather is horrible. Three winters in Minnesota has prepared me for just about anything though... So once again the question is... what to wear? I guess I have time to decide... and two operas to attend before then!

On a totally different note, so to speak, I've had a nasty throat virus the past three weeks. Today I woke up with laryngitis. It hurts to talk... forget about singing. I sing all the time... it was hard today not to ... then I'd grab my throat and croak to a halt. My next voice lesson isn't until Saturday, Dec 1st so hopefully my throat will have healed by then.

Here are some fun videos I've been singing along to with Alex. I can't decide if I love the bananas in this first one, or if they frighten me...

and an earlier version:

Which version do you like better? I can't decide, though I'm leaning towards Madelyn Kahn and Grover...

Getting Better All the Time

The singing lessons continue. I can definitely hear an improvement!! Both Jim and my teacher say that I sang well before and now I'm better. I can hear it sometimes.

It's funny but my favorite thing so far are the warm-ups! I can sing warm-ups all day. Although singing songs is fun too. I've started a standard Italian piece called "Star Vicino."

A couple of weeks ago I was with some friends and one of them was trying to remember a song. I thought I knew what it was and sang a line or two. She said, "Wow! You have a really nice voice!" and then, "Oh but wait, you sing opera." I thanked her and said, "Uh, no, I don't sing opera except alone in the car when no one else can hear me! I listen to opera... "

Speaking of that... yesterday Alex and I went to see the Opera New Jersey - Young Artist Program performance at an assisted living center in Jamesburg. I think we were the only non-seniors there who didn't work for the facility or the opera. We stayed for most of it, until Alex got restless. It didn't help that these two women in our row of seats kept showing him silly key chains and making funny faces with him.

Never as Bad as You Think

My teacher and and one of my opera friends from this summer both assured me that it's normal to hate how you sound on tape. My teacher told me not to listen to it critically, rather, use it to remind myself of the exercises when I'm home. I kept that in mind and it really did help. And I can hear myself improving. My teacher says she can hear it too.

Let's step back here a moment. My friend who reassured me that it's normal asked about my teacher - he said there are a lot of "fake" teachers out there who will tell the students whatever they think the students want to hear. So...

My voice lessons are through Westminster Conservatory. It's the public music school associated with Westminster Choir College. My teacher was an opera singer with the Baltimore Opera Company. She's an excellent teacher. She teaches Early Childhood music classes with Westminster and was Alex's teacher for a year and a half. She has shown me all sorts of techniques and she's got the whole psychology side of it under control. She knows what to say to give me confidence, etc. So I do not believe she's "fake."

That said... I forgot what else I was going to write!

I've been in Florida since Sunday, just got back today. My next lesson is tomorrow and I haven't been able to practice. There's always tomorrow afternoon.

Defenestration

I listened to the tape from last week's voice lesson. Or, I should say, I tried to listen. I couldn't. I sounded so awful I was ready to follow the tape out the window after I threw it. Only I didn't throw it. But I wanted to.

Shaaaa Faaaa Moooo

Had my first voice lesson last week. It was so much fun! There were points where I dissolved into hysterical giggles over some of the stuff she had me doing - most of it sounded like someone was having wild sex - I kept thinking of that scene in Porky's, "Why do they call her Lassie?"
But I think I did well - I was able to repeat back everything she sang or played. I learned about breathing and posture and I have homework for next class.

Oh no!

Today I found out that Nathan Gunn has pulled out of Romeo for the first 5 peformances due to illness. I've got certain connections on the investigation for me to find out what's going on, if he's ok, etc. Laryngitis most likely but who knows? He probably already had an inkling when he replied to my email last week about his website. Poor guy - really - besides breaking a contract and losing out on the salary, he's probably incredibly disappointed, as are his fans. I can't imagine how I'd feel in that situation - guilty, disappointed, sad, angry... Plus his website is a mess right now...

Luckily as of now he's still scheduled to be in it on the day I'm going. The Romeo lead also pulled out for a different illness.

I know it's selfish but I sure hope I don't fly all the way to Chicago to see him and JDF only to have one or both be sick. That would stink. (I'd use stronger language but I'm trying to keep it professional, heh heh.)

Bedtime once again.

Preparing for Next Summer

NJ Opera is doing three operas again next summer: Candide, La Cenerentola and... OK I can't remember the third. La Boheme maybe?Anyway I remember Mike, the super captain, saying that they will need supers. Don't know which operas or what they'll need... but anyway I figure since I'll probably be in at least one, I should learn them beforehand. I don't need to, obviously, but I think R&J would have been more interesting had I been familiar with it instead of hearing it for the first time out of order in bits and pieces.

Naturally I'm starting with Rossini, La Cenerentola. It's fun! Here's a clip from YouTube:

Oh what a surprise, Juan Diego Florez is in it.

That's all for tonight.

Just In Time!

Met tickets went on sale yesterday. Denise was planning on going to the box office to get some but didn't get around to it. This morning I checked and the Dec 12 R&J was almost sold out! The section we wanted was and the best available was the balcony. So she called. The woman on the phone at first told her that they didn't have 5 seats together. Denise asked her in the most desperate way if there was any way at all to get 5 together, and the woman suddenly found some! We're in the center section but all the way off to one side, three seats in row F and 2 in row E. Or is that three in E and two in F? They're right behind each other which is better than 5 in a row. I'm looking forward to it! Just have to figure out what to wear!! It'll be interesting to compare the Met's production with this summer's.

On another note, I heard back from Manon after I removed the R&J videos from YouTube:

Don't worry, I am not upset at all. I appreciated the initiative. It is very nice of you to understand my situation.
merci beaucoup,
manon.

And now before opera keeps me awake again, I'm off to bed, early for a change.

What To Make of This...

A few weeks ago, after much deliberation, I posted onto YouTube a few of my personal favorites from the videos I took of R&J rehearsals. They're each 30 seconds long and I think I posted 5. So today at my YouTube account I had the following message in my inbox:

It is Manon Strauss Evrard. Thank you for putting up some videos. They are very interesting but I would rather not have them on the internet. I am not a hundred per cent satisfied by the performance. I would really appreciate if they could be taken off youtube.

Sincerely,

Manon.

So I went in and made them private, and sent a reply that of course I'd remove them and that I'm sorry if they bothered her, blah blah blah. But the whole time I was thinking, I took the videos and they're mine to post as I want. She'd probably never be satisfied with the performance because people always see what they perceive as wrong. On the other hand, she did ask very nicely, which is why I changed them to private. That's as good as taking them down since I have to specifically allow people to view them. I also went and removed the video I posted to the Summerfest page on Facebook. I'm not removing the videos from Photobucket since, although they're public, there are no tags and I don't think people cruise around Photobucket looking for videos. I'm pretty sure she doesn't know it was me because she didn't use my name in the message. Not that it matters.

What Justifies What? Chicken vs Egg

I'm excited about going to Chicago even though it's like 6 months from now. Yeah, for the opera, but also because I'm really looking forward to just getting away from real life for a few days. It'll be a mini-adventure and a mini-escape. Maybe I'm having a mid-life crisis or something! But really, I'm looking forward to doing something on my own. I'll eat where and when I want, sleep diagonally on the bed and Alex won't be climbing over me at 3am or whenever. Of course I'll probably need benadryl or something to get to sleep! But like I wrote on my MySpace page, it may seem strange to travel all that way just for an opera, but really what I needed was an adventure, and Barbiere with JDF and NG together not only gave me the excuse, it also helped me choose a location. Otherwise I don't think a March jaunt to Chicago would be my first choice of a "me" trip! And since Auntie Cyd left us each a healthy chunk of change, I don't even feel guilty about the cost.

Speaking of cost... I'm pretty sure I'm still going to Romeo at the Met in December. More on that later this week when individual tickets go on sale. Which reminds me... I was laughing because in that little MySpace email exchange I had with Nathan, I had mentioned that I might be going to Romeo, and he replied with the stock, polite answer, "Hope to see you there" or something similar. Yeah well OK if you grab a spotlight and shine it up into the balcony and then pull out your binocs (opera glasses?!) and squint through them, you might just see me there. But I doubt it. The Lyric, on the other hand... if I had taken the 2nd row ticket, definitely. In the 14th row... maybe, but probably not. If I wait by the stage door after the show, probably. Will I do that? Probably not. Oh who the hell knows. (and I know that whoever is reading this is probably also thinking, who cares...) Gotta go to bed. Once again, opera and its peripherals are keeping me awake.

R&J Tears

I’m here at work listening to (and sort of watching, in a small window) a movie version of Romeo et Juliette that Denise loaned me. It stars Roberta Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu. I find myself mouthing the words along, and I didn’t even realize I knew them! Listening to this professional recording makes me realize how talented the NJO singers are. Manon especially. She could’ve been in this movie.

I may have to stop listening. It’s so beautiful and tragic that it’s bringing tears to my eyes. Part of that might be nostalgia for the summer…

Road Trip! (ok, Air Trip)

I'm going to Chicago, I'm going to Chicago! (sing it)

I called the Lyric on Aug 1st after many frustrating attempts at purchasing a ticket online. They offered two different seats - 2nd row center (!) and 14th row but slightly to the right of center. I thought about it and decided to go with the 14th row so I wouldn't get a neck strain (or get spat on! Blech). I got pretty good airfare from Newark to Chicago and an excellent rate at a nearby hotel. Three of my online friends from Connected Moms live there. I've known them all for over 4 years! I'm definitely meeting one and hopefully the other two also.

Let's see...

I left off some fun info from my previous post. Just silly stuff, really. Silly, giggly stuff to liven up the sometimes boring life of a mom and housewife. Remember the 29 year old boy who shamelessly flirted with me? (and anything else on two legs, but I don't care about them!) Anyway at the Sunday farewell party, he left early because his "ride" was leaving. Then he pulled me aside and said he was leaving b/c there was a good chance he was going to hook up with her that evening. THEN he said, "You know, Susan, it would have been you if you weren't married." Empty promises when there's no chance, right? I replied, "Oh yeah, I know." As if. Well maybe, in a different world where I'm single and 10 years younger!

Ok, here's the fun stuff.
Elizabeth F in Seattle is on my friends list on MySpace. I was looking at her page and saw a new friend - "Nathan." So I went to his homepage and sent him a little message, dropping Ricardo's name. Today I got a very nice reply!

I love the Internet.

Thank goodness it didn't exist when I was a teenager. Lord knows what kind of trouble I would've gotten into. Not that I needed the Internet to get me into trouble... But now I can do it all in the comfort of my desk chair. But I digress. This post is not so much about opera as it is about opera people. And ... I'd rather be sleeping so I'll sign off.
