Oh, Who Knows?

Had a really great voice lesson yesterday. I sang If Music in mezzo, in soprano, in mezzo, in soprano, back and forth, while my teacher listened. She couldn't decide which was better for me. She said that soprano sounds prettier, my voice sounds prettier, but I am having problems with some of the higher notes for whatever reason. It's not that I can't hit the notes, it's that it sounds like I'm straining to reach them in that particular song. (Yeah, I know, it's that "fear" factor.) Mezzo sounds good, she said, except for... some of the lower notes. So apparently I need a mezzo and a half? She had some name for it but I can't recall - it was one of the musical Italian terms. Anyway of course for both the high and low ends I need to... yep... open my mouth more. No news there.

We had time to go over Despina. In the land of, let's add another element to the three-dimensional space in my head, she reminded me to think ahead to the next phrase, because it sort of sounds like I'm getting ready to sing parts of it just before it's time to sing those parts. Went over that a few times too.

She said she can hear the difference each week, the improvement. That's nice to hear, especially when all I hear are the mistakes. We did lots of vocal exercises to smooth out different issues, etc.

I also found out that she'll be teaching over the summer. Unfortunately, our lawn mower broke and cost almost as much to repair as a new one so... ah the life of a homeowner. Summer voice lessons or a new lawn mower? Or maybe... a sheep?

You are a soprano down a pint or a mezzo and a half - either way, it'll work out!!! Get the sheep, and take the lessons!!! It'll feed your soul!

Maybe you have a big yard. I have a small one, about 11,000 sq. ft., and I use a push lawn mower that costs $99 at Lowe's.

By push do you mean the kind without a motor? Because the one that conked out on us was a gas mower but not self-propelled, so you could call it a push mower.

Our lawn is about the same - about a 5th of an acre - but it's very lumpy. We'd love to use one of those roller mowers but the lumps won't allow it. We're looking into cordless electric since the gas mowers have given us grief. Either way, it cuts (hahaha!) into my summer voice lesson fund.

By the way, "anon," are you trekking to Philly this June?

Yes, I mean the kind you push without a motor. Before I mow, I have to walk around and pick up twigs because they can slow things down if they get picked up by the blades. No, I'm not going to Philly. I've seen Rape of Lucretia once. It's worth seeing once, but I don't think I'll want to see it again.

We can't pick up the lumps and dips...

I think that kind is called a reel mower. Our neighbor has one so we'll see if we can borrow it to see how it works on the lumps. Today my husband borrowed another neighbor's mower, which, he found out, had been another neighbor's but that neighbor gave it to our next door neighbor when he bought a new one. Did you follow that?

Hm maybe we can borrow a different mower each week and not have to buy one this season... there's an idea.

Got a new lawnmower today - it's electric! With rebates and %s off I think I can still afford a few summer voice lessons - hooray!
